A Beginner’s Guide to Paper-Folding Puzzles
Paper-folding puzzles look intimidating and turn out to be governed by a single, friendly rule. Once you see it, you can solve almost any of them in your head. Here is that rule, a worked example, and a method for the harder multi-fold ones.

What is a paper-folding puzzle?
The setup is physical and simple. Take a square sheet of paper. Fold it one or more times along straight lines. Now punch a hole straight through all the layers at once. Then unfold the paper completely. Because the punch went through every layer, you get not one hole but several — arranged in a pattern. The puzzle hands you the folded, punched sheet and asks a single question: where will all the holes be once the paper is unfolded?
That is the entire game. No arithmetic, no vocabulary, no trivia — just your ability to picture paper opening back up. It is one of the oldest items on spatial-reasoning and aptitude tests for exactly that reason: it measures visualization, cleanly.
The one rule: every fold is a mirror
Here is the insight that makes these puzzles solvable instead of guessable. Unfolding a crease reflects everything across that crease line. A fold is a mirror, and the fold line is the mirror’s surface. Whatever holes exist on the folded side get copied to the other side, flipped across the line, when you open it.
So you never have to imagine the paper physically moving. You just have to reflect. Find the crease, and mirror every hole across it. That is the whole technique.
A worked example: one fold
Imagine a sheet folded once, right edge over to the left, so it is now a tall half-width rectangle. The crease runs down the middle. You punch one hole near the top-left of the folded sheet.
To solve it, unfold the one crease and mirror that hole across the center line. The original hole stays where it is on the left half; its reflection lands on the right half, the same distance from the center, at the same height. One punch, two holes, symmetric about the crease. If your prediction has those two holes, you are right.
Multiple folds: reflect, then reflect again
Harder puzzles fold the paper two or three times before punching. The method does not change — you just apply it once per fold, in reverse order. Unfold the last fold first and mirror every hole across that crease. Now you have more holes. Unfold the next crease and mirror all of them across it. Repeat until the paper is flat.
A useful thing to know: each unfold can at most double the number of holes. One punch through a sheet folded three times can open into as many as eight holes (2 × 2 × 2), arranged with a satisfying symmetry. When you see lots of folds, expect a lot of holes — and expect them to be balanced around the crease lines.
Mistakes beginners make
Forgetting the original. When you mirror a hole, the original does not disappear. After each unfold you keep every hole you had and add its reflection.
Mirroring across the wrong line. Reflect across the crease you are currently unfolding, not the center of the whole sheet. With multiple folds the crease you care about moves each step.
Rushing the last fold. The final unfold usually creates the most holes at once. Slow down on it — that is where predictions go wrong.
How to get good at them
Like any spatial skill, this one is trained, not innate — and it improves surprisingly fast. The fastest way is reps on easy puzzles until the “mirror across the crease” move becomes automatic, then adding folds one at a time.
